RA Power Solutions was advised about the failure of the connecting rod of the DAIHATSU 5DC-17 Engine due to the breakage of the connecting rod bolts. The connecting rod damaged the crankpins and the engine block on both sides. The owners of the vessel, based in RUE DU GABIAN 98000 MONACO, called RA Power Solutions engineers.
The details are as follows:

Crankshaft Repair:
The damaged crankshaft of the DAIHATSU 5DC-17 engine was subject to the following inspection procedure:
- Dimensional inspection for taper and ovality.
- All five crankpins having a standard diameter of 145 mm had ovality and taper ranging between 0.62 mm to 0.76 mm, which is considered to be on the higher side.
- Crankpin hardness was checked by a portable calibrated hardness tester, and it was observed within the limits.
- Since the crankshaft was damaged in an accident, all the crankpins were subject to crack detection by MPI. No cracks or abnormalities were found in any of the five crankpins.
- On visual inspection, radius radius-filled profile was found damaged.
- Deflection of the crankshaft was checked and was observed within limits.

Crankshaft Grinding:
Based on the above initial inspection conducted by our technicians, the onsite grinding of all the crankpins was undertaken.
The crankpin size was reduced from the standard 145 mm to the following:
- Minimum size after grinding is maintained as 142.98
- Maximum size maintained after grinding is 143.00
All the parameters were checked during the final inspection, and the crankshaft was found acceptable.
The grinding of DAIHATSU 5DC-17 engine crankpin having a standard diameter of 145 mm and bearing with of only 64 mm was a challenge mainly because in this particular model of DAIHATSU 5DC-17 engine, the bearing width is too less and it’s difficult to accommodate the grinding tool on the crankpin. The old and leading grinding companies based in Europe and the UK do not have the facility and equipment to grind the crankpin with having width as small as 64 mm.
As a protocol and a normal procedure, RA Power technicians prepare pre-inspection reports for all the technical parameters checked by them before the repair of the crankshaft and also on the completion of the crankshaft repair of the DAIHATSU 5DC-17 engine, final reports were prepared on RA Power Solutions inspection formats. These reports are available to us and can be shared in case required.

RA Power Solutions is proud to execute successfully the onsite grinding of the crankpin, having such a small bearing width. The damaged engine block was repaired by metal stitching and the metal locking process, and was saved from rejection. The engine, after repair, is performing satisfactorily.
RA Power Solutions is the only company in the asian continent providing onsite crankshaft repair for the smaller crankpin width of even 40 mm. For further details, you may contact us at rajshahani@rapowersolutions.com or info@rapowersolutions.com, or call us at +91 9582647131 or +91 9810012383.
