Insitu Crankshaft Repair

The bearing seized and damaged the Daihatsu 6DK-20 auxiliary engine crankshaft. The authorities did not permit the vessel to cross the Suez Canal because the auxiliary engine was not operational.

Details of the Inspection of the Crankshaft of Daihatsu 6DK-20 undertaken by Technicians

  • During the visual inspection, we found crankpin #6 of the crankshaft damaged. The remaining crankpins were in good condition.
  • The hardness of the crankpin was checked and observed on the higher side in some spots.
  • After removing the bearing material from the crankpin, we carried out a crack detection test. We observed multiple hairline cracks.
  • The crankpin number #6 was subject to dimensional inspection. Against the standard diameter of 170.00 MM. The Minimum diameter observed was 169.26 MM, thus the ovality of 0.74 MM.

Action Taken By RA Power Solutions for the Repair of the Damaged Crankpin

  • We initially ground crankpin #6 to a size of 169.00 mm, which is 1.00 mm undersize from the standard diameter.
  • Since the crankpin still had ovality and damage line marks, we jointly decided with the Chief Engineer to undersize the crankpin by 2.00 mm. We maintained the final size of the crankpin at 168.00 mm.

Supply of Crankpin Undersize Bearing by RA Power Solutions Pvt Ltd

RA Power Solutions technicians carried with them undersized bearings of 1.5 MM/2.0 MM/2.5 MM. The 2.00 MM bearing was retained by the ship staff and the engine was commissioned. The Auxiliary engine as on date is performing satisfactory.

In this case, time was short. RA Power technicians hand-carried a 2.00 mm undersize bearing, which greatly helped the client. The team commissioned the engine within four hours of grinding the crankpin.
