RA Power Solutions was approached by a leading shipping company based in Vietnam. The vessel was approaching Kochi Port, India and reported serious damage to the Intermediate Shaft and Bearing.
Key Observations by RA Power Solutions Technicians
Intermediate Shaft
- On removal of the Intermediate Shaft bearing, the excessive damage to the bearing seating area was observed.
- The Intermediate Shaft bearing, babbitt white metal, was badly stuck on the bearing journal diameter.
- We removed the white metal from the Intermediate Shaft bearing seating area. We observed an ovality of 0.38 MM. The standard diameter of the Intermediate Shaft Journal is 505.00 MM.
- Hardness and MPI Tests undertaken and observed within limits.
- We observed localized damage, bearing line marks, and a rough surface on the Intermediate Shaft Journal diameter.
- We repaired the Intermediate Shaft Journal diameter using an in situ grinding and polishing machine, maintaining the diameter at 504.00 MM. We reduced the intermediate shaft bearing seating diameter by 1.0 MM.
Repair of Intermediate Shaft Bearing
- We removed the damaged babbitt white metal Intermediate Shaft bearing from the vessel. We transported it by air over a distance of more than 2,600 KM from Kochi Port, India, to our facility in IMT Manesar near New Delhi.
- We inspected the damaged bearing. Then we rebabbitted the bearing and machined it to maintain an inner diameter of 504.50 MM. The oil gap was kept as specified in the manual.
- Our representative hand-carried the bearing back to Kochi Port, India. This step saved time.

Assembly of Intermediate Bearing and Shaft
- The bearing assembled by RA Power Solutions Technicians.
- We checked all the parameters. We carried out the oil-gap measurement and blue matching of the bearing with the Intermediate Shaft.
