Crankshaft of DAIHATSU 5DC-17

RA Power Solutions was advised about the failure of the connecting rod of the DAIHATSU 5DC-17 Engine due to the breakage of the connecting rod bolts. The connecting rod damaged the crankpins and the engine block on both sides. The owners of the vessel, based in RUE DU GABIAN 98000 MONACO, called RA Power Solutions engineers.

The details are as follows:

Crankshaft Details
1 Engine Model DAIHATSU 5DC-17
2 Vessel Type Container
3 Crankpin Diameter 145 mm

Crankpin Bearing width

64 mm

Crankshaft Repair:

The damaged crankshaft of the DAIHATSU 5DC-17 engine was subject to the following inspection procedure:

  • Dimensional inspection for taper and ovality.
  • All five crankpins, each with a standard diameter of 145 mm, showed ovality and taper ranging from 0.62 mm to 0.76 mm. Technicians consider this range to be on the higher side.
  • Technicians checked the crankpin hardness using a portable calibrated hardness tester. They observed that it remained within the specified limits
  • Since an accident damaged the crankshaft, technicians performed crack detection on all crankpins using MPI. They did not find any cracks or abnormalities in the five crankpins.
  • On visual inspection, radius radius-filled profile found damaged.
  • Technicians checked the crankshaft deflection and observed that it remained within the specified limits.

Crankshaft Grinding:

Based on the initial inspection, our technicians undertook the onsite grinding of all the crankpins.

The crankpin size was reduced from the standard 145 mm to the following:

  1. Minimum size after grinding is maintained as 142.98
  2. Maximum size maintained after grinding is 143.00

All the parameters were checked during the final inspection, and the crankshaft was found acceptable.

The grinding of DAIHATSU 5DC-17 engine crankpin having a standard diameter of 145 mm and bearing with of only 64 mm was a challenge mainly because in this particular model of DAIHATSU 5DC-17 engine, the bearing width is too less and it’s difficult to accommodate the grinding tool on the crankpin. The old and leading grinding companies based in Europe and the UK do not have the facility and equipment to grind the crankpin with having width as small as 64 mm.

As a standard protocol, RA Power Solutions technicians prepare pre-inspection reports for all technical parameters they check before repairing the crankshaft. After completing the crankshaft repair of the DAIHATSU 5DC-17 engine, they prepare final reports using RA Power Solutions’ inspection formats. We keep these reports on record and share them upon request.

RA Power Solutions is proud to execute successfully the onsite grinding of the crankpin, having such a small bearing width. Technicians repaired the damaged engine block using metal stitching and the metal locking process. This process saved the block from rejection. The engine, after repair, is performing satisfactorily.

RA Power Solutions is the only company in the asian continent providing onsite crankshaft repair for the smaller crankpin width of even 40 mm. For further details, you may contact us at rajshahani@rapowersolutions.com or info@rapowersolutions.com, or call us at +91 9582647131 or  +91 9810012383.
